Deposition of Elizabeth Bishop

Depositions taken before Master Richard Portriffe, mayor of Rye in the county of Sussex, the sixth day of February anno domini 1608, annoque regni regis Jacobi etc. sexto.

Elizabeth Bishop widow of Rye aforesaid, aged 30 years and upwards, being sworn and examined, deposeth and sayeth as followeth.

That is to say, that Master Robert Carpenter her father, deceased, in his lifetime did admonish and warn this deponent not to meddle nor make in any manner of wise with Anne now the wife of Master George Taylor, for she is a shrewd woman to deal … the reason why my her father did so admonish her w… for that this deponent did tell him that Mistress Taylor had div… times requested her to come to her house and talk with her. And then he said she was a bad person.

And this deponent sayeth that at a certain time, this deponent being at the house of Master Taylor when there was a controversy between him and Master Whitfield about a certain gate, upon divers speeches which the said Mistress Taylor then used against the said Master Whitfield, this deponent said unto her the said Mistress Taylor,

“I marvel that you and Master Whitfield cannot agree togethers.” And she answered her again,
“Agree with him? I shall agree with him well enough, for I will torment him all the veins of his heart!” And she this deponent asked her

Which way? and the said Anne Taylor said that she had sent a messenger amongst unto them unto Master Whitfield’s house that should torment them to their hearts in all the veins of their hearts.
