This deposition taken the 20th November quinto Jacobi.
The examination of Philip Williams of Rye, tailor, taken before the Mayor and jurats of Rye, the 20th day of November anno regni domini nostri Jacobi dei gratia regis nunc anglie etc quinto.
The said Philip Williams sayeth that about a three years past, as he remembreth, he this examinate being hired by Master Taylor to dig and make his garden, at his house in Rye where he now dwelleth, he this examinate did labour in his garden by the space of a week or thereabouts.
And being there at work, Master Taylor did show unto this examinate a place in the garden near unto the summerhouse under a tree there a place which was somewhat sunk down. And the said Master Taylor did say unto him
This is the place that Pywall did dig for money, and that there was treasure hid there, as he had heard, and that if this examinate had a stomach to dig for any, ?he might.
And that was all that Master Taylor said unto him. But Mistress Taylor did speak unto this examinate divers times to
Dig in the said place, assuring him that there was treasure hid there, and that there were spirits did haunt thereabouts.
But this examinate would not believe her, neither would he dig in that place.
