[On back of document:] Wm Richard Thornberry’s examination and deposition

Richard Thornberry of Rye, labourer, being examined before Master Richard Portriffe, Mayor of Rye, anno domini 1608 the 30th November annosque regis nunc Jacobi etc sexto, sayeth as followeth, viz:

That he this examinate, being in prison within the town of Rye aforesaid this last summer, being thither committed by Master Mayor, at which time Mistress Taylor was then likewise within two days after committed to prison; Susan Swapper, who now lieth in prison and at that time also was in prison, did tell this examinate that the said Mistress Taylor did come down unto her the said Susan divers times whilst the said Mistress Taylor was in prison, and persuaded her the said Susan to

deny those things which she the said Susan had before confessed at her arraignment.

And she the said Susan did further tell this examinate that John Scragg did tell her, the sa-d Susan, that

If she would -eny that she had confessed ag--st Mistress Taylor, and kneel do-- and ask her the said Mistress -----r forgiveness, that then Master T---- would procure her
