But the said Pywall feared to dig alone there, and therefore he but desired this examinate to stand by him till he h whilst he did dig there, which accordingly this examinate did. And the said Pywall did dig three foot deep, and then desired this examinate to help him to a piercer to pierce the ground.

And this examinate did fetch him a little short spit, and with the same he did sound the ground, and the spit being thrust into the ?gard ground about two foot deep to the judgment of the said Pywall and likewise of this examinate, they might hear a sound as if the spit had hit upon some brass pot. And the said Pywall, digging two foot deeper, hoping to find the pot and treasure and finding nothing, took the spit again and sounded. And then he found the sound in like sort as he did at first, and found the sound same to be two foot lower. And then he digged again two foot d the third time and he found the sound to be very near in his judgment, and then he digged further, but as he digged further so to his judgment the sound ground being pierced with the ? spit the sound was further off. –d si--- t--- ?down – a—d And so the said P-----, saying he did labour in vain, gave ?over ?his work, and filled up the hole again.

To the 5th he cannot depose further than he hath already deposed.
